Ireland: PhD in Natural peptides to enhance food quality and safety

Applications are invited for a PhD position, which is aimed at investigating the ability of a range of a food grade bio preservatives to enhance the activity of a number of bacteriocins (antimicrobial peptides produced by bacteria) including nisin and nisin derivatives, lacticin 3147 and bactofensin for the control of food related pathogenic bacteria or food spoilage organisms. The project is funded by the Department of Agriculture, Food and Fisheries (DAFF) for the duration of three years. The successful candidate will hold a BSc and/or MSc in Microbiology, Molecular Biology or a related discipline, and will become part of a dynamic and well-funded research group based in the Department of Microbiology. Candidates should be self-motivated, while previous laboratory experience in microbiology/molecular biology is highly desirable.

Ireland: PhD position in DEVELOPMENT OF BIONIC SENSOR MATERIALS FOR METABOLIC IMAGING IN REGENERATIVE MEDICINE

The Science Foundation Ireland funded four-year PhD studentship is available from the 01/09/2014 at the Laboratory of Biophysics and Bioanalysis under "Starting Investigator Research Grant" scheme led by Dr. Ruslan I. Dmitriev.
A four-year PhD studentship position is available from 1/09/2014.
The research project is on the development of novel luminescent oxygen and pH sensitive probes based on self-assembling viral nanoparticles. The biosensors produced will be characterised by spectroscopic and biochemical methods, and evaluated in 2D and 3D cell and tissue models by live imaging techniques, particularly Phosphorescence Lifetime Imaging Microscopy (PLIM). The project involves multi-disciplinary approaches, chemical and synthetic biology, spectroscopy, molecular and cell biology, bio-imaging.
Applicants are expected to attain first or upper second class honours BSc or MSc degree in Biochemistry, Biophysics, Molecular and Cell Biology or related discipline. We are looking for highly motivated, hard-working candidates who are able to work in multi-disciplinary environment, learn new biochemical techniques and participate in team work. Previous experience or background in related techniques, biological models and studies is highly encouraged.
The Laboratory of Biophysics and Bioanalysis is an internationally recognised leader in optical oxygen sensing and imaging, hypoxia research, cell and cancer metabolism and bioanalytical chemistry. The engineering of integrated sources is key for the progress of quantum communication and information processing systems. Description
The position offers the chance of developing novel integrated devices for engineered photon pair generation based on periodically poled LN or KTP waveguides. ARAMACC is a collaboration between nine internationally-recognized research teams (in UK, Germany, Norway, Croatia, France, Netherlands and Portugal) and two industrial partners (in UK and Norway), each with complementary expertise in a wide range of marine sciences.

Description
You will be working with shells of long-lived bivalve molluscs collected from waters off the NW coast of Scotland, from the Irish Sea and from the North Sea.

You will construct chronologies using the annual increments preserved in the shells and you will then compare them with (a) instrumental measurements, (b) shell-based chronologies built by other ESRs working in the ARAMACC ITN, and (c) other natural archives for the same region in order to build up a detailed picture of the history of marine change in the NE Atlantic sector over the past few hundred years (possibly as much as a thousand years).

ESR1 will work on shells from northwest Scotland shelf and coastal waters, and ESR2 will work on Holocene shells from the North Sea and Irish Sea.

As part of the ARAMACC training programme, you will participate with other ARAMACC ESRs from across Europe in a research cruise, three summer schools and two workshops delivered by ARAMACC partners and designed to train the ESRs in a wide range of generic and specific skills. 

You will develop multidisciplinary research skills involving:
- field collection of bivalves and shells for use in chronology construction
- preparation and analysis of acetate peels of bivalve shells
- chronology construction using annual increments embedded in the shells
- geochemical analysis of selected shells from climatically sensitive periods 
- statistical analysis of sclerochronological data, including comparisons with climate measurements

Your character and achievements should include: 
- A good first degree and/or masters’ degree in any branch of marine or environmental science
- High level of spoken and written English and good communication skills
- Positive attitude toward field and laboratory work
- Ability to organize and prioritize their own research within the project schedule

DescriptionThe precise manufacturing of complex 3D micro parts, e.g in the injection moulding process, places high demands on process control. Strategies are necessary that allow a control of the process based on process variables, such as melt pressure, that are measured inside the mould cavity, where the process takes place. However, even the smallest state-of-the-art pressure transducers are not miniaturized enough to be installed in micro moulds. Therefore, ESR 11 will develop an integral quality control loop by using CT to indirectly assess optimal process variables. For example, CT can be used to control: (1) peak cavity pressure, to avoid incomplete filling or flash; (2) differential shrinkage, to avoid part warpage after ejection; (3) differential pressure values among cavities in multi-cavity moulds, to correct flow imbalances and to achieve uniform part properties. In addition, ESR 11 will develop an interactive relational database to correlate CT measurements of moulding defects to effective actions that the operator should perform in order to improve the moulding quality. ESR will apply similar approaches also for quality control of other micro manufacturing technologies. ESR 11 will benefit from the cooperation with ESR 10 for the calibration of the micro-measurements.

Full Time: The appointment will be on UCL Grade 6. The salary range will be £25,722 - £30,442 per annum plus PhD fees, inclusive of London Allowance.
The postholder will develop and employ electrical measurement techniques to measure the properties of quantum spins in silicon, which are increasingly seen as holding great promise for future science and technology. Tasks will include preparation of multi-terminal devices using optical and e-beam lithography and ion implantation, measurements of current-voltage characteristics of as a function of magnetic field, temperature, as well as microwave, THz, IR and visible radiation, and assembly and programming (via Labview) of necessary microwave, optical and electrical hardware.
The position is initially funded for 3 years by the EU FP and Marie Curie Action NANOMICROWAVE.
The nature of this PhD traineeship means that it comes with a higher salary than a standard PhD position. However, there are restrictions on eligibility. Specifically, students must not have resided or carried out their main activity in the UK for more than 12 months in the last 3 years. In addition, Early-Stage Researchers must (at the time of recruitment) be in the first four years (full-time equivalent research experience) of their research careers and not yet have a doctoral degree. This is measured from the date when they obtained the degree which would formally entitle them to embark on a doctorate, either in the country in which the degree was obtained or in the country in which the research training is provided, irrespective of whether or not a doctorate is envisaged.
Applicants are expected to have an excellent first degree (2.1 or higher) in physics or electronic engineering. They should also have experience of performing electrical and/or optical measurements at cryogenic temperatures and experience with CAD tools for design of electronic devices.

Ten Early Stage Researcher (ESR) positions are offered in the FP7 Marie Curie Initial Training Network (ITN) SASSYPOL. This research-training network involves institutions across Europe (10 from the academic sector and 2 from the private sector) which will train a new generation of highly skilled chemists in the production of novel functional soft systems and materials, and push this emerging field of research into applications at the cutting-edge of nanotechnology. The expertise of all partners encompasses supramolecular chemistry and dynamic self-assembly, but individual research competences are quite diverse focusing on molecularly defined nanostructures, liquid crystalline materials, hydrogen-bonded supramolecules, molecular systems based on host-guest interactions, and advanced modelling and characterisation techniques of polymeric and self-assembled materials.
Supramolecular chemistry provides a powerful approach to develop new self-assembled materials with properties, such as healability, recyclability and facile processability, which will have applications in biomedicine, energy, composite materials and sensing. The ITN unites leading experts from academic and industry in the areas of supramolecular and polymer chemistry. Partners from the private sector will extend training beyond that of a traditional academic setting, by bridging fundamental science with application and commercialisation. The ITN will thus embrace both breadth and quality that can be achieved only through an interdisciplinary pan-European effort.
The training programme aims to improve theoretical, practical and complementary skills of the recruited ESRs: it includes state-of-the-art local training activities, network-wide courses and workshops, and secondments in partner laboratories.
ESR Fellowships are available in the following research groups. These positions are open to suitable qualified researchers in the first four years of their research career. Applications are invited from highly motivated graduate students with a strong background in molecular biology, biochemistry, chemistry, biophysics or physics to work towards a PhD. Areas of research include the structure and function of membrane proteins, especially secondary-active transporters, and structure determination of large macromolecular complexes by electron cryo-microscopy or cryo-tomography.
