The occurrence, fate and remediation of pharmaceuticals in surface waters.

Deadline: 9th July 2012
Nationality: All
Field: Pharmacy

A wide range of medicines, illicit drugs and antibiotics are increasingly reported in environmental surveys of waste effluents and surface waters. The source of these chemicals is principally wastewater treatment works, but diffusive sources such as runoff from agricultural areas may also be important. This project provides the opportunity for a bright graduate with a chemistry physical science background to work with an analytical instrument consultant to develop state-of-the-art analytical methods for a number of priority compounds and then to undertake environmental surveys and chemical fate studies to understand pharmaceutical behaviour in contrasting aquatic environments.
