UK: PhD Position “Biomimicry: Business Management Innovations Inspired by Nature”

An Early Stage Researcher post is available immediately, funded as part of a PF7 Marie Curie Initial Training Network: Innovation for Sustainability (I4S). The 3 year post includes a PhD programme within the University of Exeter Business School. The successful applicant will:
(1) Design and undertake research to explore innovations in management for sustainability inspired by nature: ‘biomimicry’. Special focus of the research is how business can learn from nature’s principles to be more adaptive and resilient in volatile times.
Biomimicry, or the conscious emulation of nature’s designs, is not a new topic in the wider sustainable business literature nor within the product design field. Concepts such as the eco-efficiency, eco-effectiveness, cradle to cradle manufacturing, and the circular economy have been inspired by nature’s patterns and principles. However, what is less well understood is how organisational and management processes and systems can learn from nature’s patterns to be resilient, given current sustainability challenges.
(2) Undertake an extensive literature review of academic and practitioner journals and periodicals to scope schools of thought, relevant concepts, themes, case studies and gaps in knowledge, focussing on biomimicry and sustainable business.
(3) Undertake primary research involving a 6 month research secondment organised in collaboration with academic supervisors and project partners, ATOS and WWF International. Expected primary research will include case studies, semi-structured interviews; participant observation, to explore the application of nature’s principles to management systems and models in more detail.
(4) Collaborate with academic supervisors in the Business School, University of Exeter, project partners ATOS and WWF International, and the wider EABIS-led consortium.
Applicants will possess an undergraduate degree (2:1 or above) or equivalent in relevant business and/or sustainability fields and excellent written and verbal communication skills. They must be eligible to be appointed as an Early Stage Researcher in the UK under the EC Framework 7 Early Stage Training Scheme. This is currently defined as;
-          Be in the first four years (full time equivalent) of their research careers starting at the date of obtaining a degree formally entitling them to embark on a doctorate in the UK or in the country where they obtained their degree.
-          Not have or be currently studying towards a PhD.

Understanding Corporate Front-runners in Sustainable Innovation

This PhD position shall focus upon research with corporate front-runners of sustainability. Whilst meeting the demands of Corporate Sustainability remains a new and novel task for most companies, for some it has now long formed part of their everyday thinking and corporate strategy. These sustainability front-runners have become relatively experienced at Sustainable Innovation (SI) and are using it to great effect to meet both environmental and social challenges and achieve commercial success.

This position shall address the following research questions: What organizational processes trigger, enable and create barriers for transformative sustainable innovation? How does the goal of sustainability affect, modify or change internal innovation processes? Are the patterns of sustainable innovation unique to this area? What governance mechanisms appear to be most effective in facilitating sustainable innovation within firms? To what degree can a general conceptual framework for sustainable innovation be developed?

The research methodology will consist of in-depth case study analysis of 2-3 associated business partners, including a 4-10 month secondment at the WBCSD whereby co-supervision will be provided by Mr Peter Bakker. The approach of the study will primarily be qualitative using methods such as in-depth interviews, document analysis, and participant observation. ESRs will have the opportunity to interact, observe, and participate in firm-level innovation discussions and projects.

Hybrid Sourcing Model: A Firm Level Analysis

This is an exciting opportunity to undertake research into the developing field of global sourcing of Services at a Top-10 UK business school.  The School of Business and Economics at Loughborough University invites excellent applications for the above PhD Studentship starting as soon as possible (no later than October 2013).

The Studentship is open to home/EU and international/overseas students. It will run for 3 years and it includes:

About the project:

Recent evidence suggests that many firms are pursuing a hybrid sourcing approach in which both third party service providers and captive centres are part of the global business service organisation. The rationale of a hybrid sourcing model is to achieve synergies between the advantages of third party outsourcing and in-house captive centre delivery and to capture additional value from the spread of activities while mitigating risks.

The aim of this PhD project is therefore to:

1. Justify and develop the terminology regarding a hybrid sourcing model.
2. Develop and test a conceptual model that explains the antecedents and consequently the capability-based of a hybrid sourcing organisation.
3. Develop and test a conceptual model that explains the success factors of a hybrid sourcing model at the firm level.

Sweden: DOCTORAL STUDENTS IN ECONOMICS

These positions are for a PhD degree, which implies that the total time of employment may not exceed four years of full time study at the postgraduate level. The exact number of positions that are available has not yet been decided. During recent years the Department has financed four to eight new PhD students each year.

Job assignments

The holders of these positions have a primary obligation to successfully fulfil their postgraduate (third cycle) education ending with a doctoral degree (PhD). A position as doctoral student can contain some limited teaching or other departmental work at the Department of Economics. The maximum amount of such work is 20%.

Eligibility/Entry Requirements

An applicant has basic eligibility for third cycle studies if he or she:
1. has been awarded a second cycle degree,
2. has completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, including at least 60 credits at second cycle level, or
3. has acquired the equivalent knowledge in some other way, either in Sweden or abroad
(Higher Education Ordinance, Chapter 7, Section 39)

An applicant is eligible to be admitted to the third cycle degree programme in Economics if he or she fulfils the basic eligibility requirements, and has documented qualifications worth at least 90 credits in Economics and independent projects (degree projects) worth at least 15 credits in Economics.
