Denmark: PhD Scholarship in Playware for Welfare Technology

Deadline: 24 Nov. 2012

A 3-year PhD scholarship is available at the Center for Playware at DTU Electrical Engineering. We conduct research in the interdisciplinary field of playware, including research in modern artificial intelligence, modular robotics, human-robot interaction, play and play culture.

The PhD study is part of the project Patient@Home together with hospitals, municipalities, companies and academic partners. Patient@Home aims at developing welfare technology that facilitates intervention, care, prevention and rehabilitation.

The main subject of this PhD project is to develop a methodology for development of playware and for evidence studies of (playware) care technology which is supposed to support the citizen in non-institutionalized contexts, e.g. in the private home. In institutionalized settings it is possible – to a high degree - to control experimental parameters, whereas such control becomes a challenge when experiments are to be performed in non-institutionalized settings.

This challenge raises a number of questions: Can evidence be transferred from institutionalized setting to non-institutionalized settings? Can evidence studies be performed and parameters controlled in experiments in non-institutionalized settings? In order to generalize the methodology, the project will make evidence studies with intervention groups with a high volume.

Qualifications
Candidates should hold a MSc degree in engineering or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to the MSc degree in engineering. Practical experience with playware development and user studies is required.

Salary and appointment terms
The salary and appointment terms are consistent with the current rules for PhD degree students. The period of employment is 3 years. We hope that you can start as soon as possible, preferably in December 2012.

Further information Further information about the PhD may be obtained by contacting Henrik Hautop Lund, professor, hhl@elektro.dtu.dk.
