UK: Marie Curie Early Stage Researcher Engineering

Deadline: 6 Feb. 2013

Marie Curie Early Stage Researcher

University of Leeds -Engineering

(Full Time, Fixed Term, 3 years)
Marie Curie Early Stage Researcher (ESR) in Multidisciplinary Design Optimisation and Robust Optimisation of Open Rotor Aircraft Engine Components. This new research position is being funded by through the AMEDEO European Commission FP7 Marie Curie Initial Training Network (MC ITN). You will work within the School of Mechanical Engineering, University of Leeds. You will be a member of a multidisciplinary consortium (with Rolls Royce, Derby, UK, the Von Karman Institute, Belgium, and Koҫ University, Turkey) working on an exciting new project aiming to develop the first coupled Multidisciplinary Design Optimisation (MDO) methodology for improving the efficiency of advanced open rotor engines.
The project will involve the development of: a design parameterisation to identify suitable design parameters for each discipline; computationally efficient robust design techniques for the propagation of uncertainties into the CFD simulations; efficient multi-objective multidisciplinary search techniques; multi-fidelity modelling tools where fast (low-fidelity) simulation tools interact with slower high-fidelity tools. There will be close collaboration with and secondments to Rolls Royce, Derby, UK, and the Von Karman Institute, Belgium. You will be expected to attend a number of training events delivered by AMEDEO partner organisations.

The successful candidate will have a 1st or upper second class (or equivalent) undergraduate degree in Engineering, Mathematics or a Physical Science and hands-on experience of high fidelity RANS based CFD simulation. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills are essential, as is a willingness to work flexibly and travel to collaborating Partners. It is expected that the successful applicant would register for a PhD degree in the University of Leeds. Under the Marie Curie ITN eligibility criteria, which are put in place to encourage mobility and the training of early researchers.
