Denmark: PhD position available within the project “Imaging the Complex Interactions of Oil and Water in Geological Samples”

Deadline: 19 Nov. 2012

DTU Nanotech would like to invite applications for a 3-year PhD position within the project “Imaging the Complex Interactions of Oil and Water in Geological Samples”

Understanding how oil and water mix and flow through microscopic pores in chalk is essential for optimal development and selection of oil production technology and strategy. This project will test several methods for imaging the interactions of oil, water, and chemicals (e.g. surfactants) in the nano- and micrometer sized pores in chalk samples. Based on test experiments, the most promising imaging methods will be further developed to provide the most valuable information on the processes occurring in model systems and geological samples.

Please be aware that the employment of a candidate in this position will be dependent on granting of sufficient financing.

Producing oil from petroleum reservoirs such as chalk and limestone most often brings water in contact with the oil and the reservoir rock [1]. In some cases deliberate waterflooding, with e.g. sea water pumped into the oil field, is used to displace oil and enhance oil recovery [2][3]. Any improvement in our understanding of the oil-water mixture properties and the imbibition behavior in an oil field will be valuable to optimize how we exploit the natural energy resources.

The PhD will be employed in the Molecular Windows group at the Department of Micro and Nanotechnology and a considerable part of the work will be performed at the Center of Energy Resources Engineering, Department of Chemistry, and the Center for Electron Nanoscopy, all at the Technical University of Denmark.

QualificationsWe encourage outstanding candidates to apply for this position. The ideal applicant is an engineer or Master of Science, has an educational background in physics or chemistry and a strong interest in working experimentally and in a cross-disciplinary environment. Experience with microfabrication, scanning-, transmission- or cryo electron microscopy is an advantage. Strong communication skills and the wish to combine research methods from a wide range of scientific fields will be appreciated.

Salary and appointment terms The salary and appointment terms are consistent with the current rules for PhD students at DTU. The period of employment is 3 years.
