Netherlands: PhD in Development of an Innovative, Lightweight Automotive Exhaust System

Deadline: 1st Nov. 2012

Job description

The Structural Integrity and Composites group of Delft University of Technology, in cooperation with BOSAL Emission Control Systems N.V., has created a new, patented concept for lightweight automotive exhaust systems. The trajectory from idea to proof-of-principle has been completed. However, significant research efforts are needed to achieve the status of a production-ready system. Issues like geometric design (for a specific automobile), packagging, structural properties, vibrations, acoustic performance, durability, homologation issues, production methods and organisation, logistic aspects and quality control need appropriate attention. The multidisciplinary character of this research topic will lead at the end of the project (4 years) to a PhD degree. The project is financed by IWT (Belgian Governmental Agency for Innovation by Science and Technology) and BOSAL (a major OEM for automotive parts). The candidate is expected to conduct research at both TU Delft's Department of Aerospace Engineering and the BOSAL R&D department in Lummen, Belgium.
