Denmark: PhD Scholarship in Integrated Quality Control of Precision Assemblies using Computed Tomography

Deadline: 15 September 2013

Technical University of Denmark -DTU Mechanical Engineering
The candidate is expected to perform:
  • state-of-the-art study concerning assembly verification (theory and modeling of virtual assembly including voxel data modelling) and tolerance assessment on assemblies
  • theoretical analysis with generation of synthetic assembly models (different combination of densities in the different parts) and selection of assembly case studies for estimating contact areas, determination of assembly parameters and development of calibration procedures
  • experimental investigation with scanning campaigns involving different scanners (preliminary experimental investigation to optimize scanning parameter settings and final scans)
  • assembly verification on voxel data, using different software
  • assembly verification on stl-data, using different stl-generation algorithms and different software data analysis and comparison of results. The student will benefit from interaction with ESR 5, with short period research stay at UNIPD, Italy, in connection with realization of traceability, and at Novo Nordisk, Denmark, concerning industrial applicability and validation.
Candidates should have a master's degree in engineering or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to the master's degree in engineering.
A PhD scholarship is open within the section of Manufacturing Engineering, DTU Mechanical Engineering. The section carries out research in the field of dimensional metrology, including coordinate metrology and metrology based on X-ray Computed Tomography (CT).
Dimensional CT metrology is essential for quality control of assemblies, where the geometry and dimensions of components may differ in unassembled and assembled state: an assembly may fail geometrically, even if all individual elements of the assembly meet tolerances before assembly. This PhD project is financed as ESR13 under the Marie Curie ESR Project INTERAQCT - International Network for the Training of Early stage Researchers on Advanced Quality control by Computed Tomography, see http://www.interaqct.eu/.
Responsibililties and tasks
Qualifications
At the time of recruitment, candidates should have less than 4 years' of research experience and be without a doctoral degree. The researcher must not have resided, worked or studied in Denmark for more than 12 months in the 3 years prior to the time of recruitment. Compulsory national service and/or short stays are not taken into account. Special rules apply for international (European interest) organisations.
