The Department of Computing is a leading department of Computer Science among UK Universities. It has consistently been awarded the highest research rating (5*) in Research Assessment Exercises (RAE), coming 2nd in the 2008 RAE, and was rated as "Excellent" in the previous national assessment of teaching quality.
An opportunity has arisen for a Research Associate (post-doctoral level) for the Technology Strategy Board funded project OpenShareThe aim of the project is to build a secure file-sharing system with rules-based in-the-network processing for Media companies. The commercial partners include a well-known Soho post-processing house and a provider of Cloud solutions to the media industry.
Within the project, the applicant will be responsible for setting up and maintaining project equipment, as well as designing and developing a rules-based storage and processing system on OpenStack and Amazon Web Services. In addition, the successful candidate will be required to work effectively with the project partners on a weekly basis.
The successful candidate will have a strong background in applied computing and should be able to demonstrate experience in the areas of Infrastructure-as-a-Service administration and development; rules engines; and authorisation systems. To apply applicantsmust hold a PhD degree (or equivalent) in an area pertinent to the subject area, i.e. Computing or Engineering.
Applicants must have excellent communication skills and be able to organise their own work with minimal supervision and prioritise work to meet deadlines. Preference will be given to applicants with a proven research record and publications in the relevant areas. All applicants must be fluent in spoken and written English.
