Sweden: Three PhD positions in International Migration and Ethnic Relations (IMER)

Employment as a doctoral studentThe student employed as a doctoral student shall primarily devote time to his/her own research. Decisions regarding employment of doctoral students can be found in the Higher Education Ordinance 5 Chap. 1-7 §§. The doctoral student is expected to actively participate in the research and teaching environment and typically has up to 20 per cent departmental duties, primarily teaching, compensated in time. 
One of the PhD position is tied specifically to the Guest Professorship at the Malmo Institute for Studies of Migration, Diversity and Welfare (MIM) and includes duties pertaining to the activities of the guest professorship. This employment (20%) entails primarily being responsible for social events and activities as well as the practical administrative issues related to the visiting professorship. This employment also includes assisting the visiting professor in his or her activities. 
EligibilityThe basic requirements for third-cycle (doctoral) education are that the student has
  1. received a second-cycle higher education degree,
  2. completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits are second-cycle, or
  3. in some other way, within or outside the country, acquired equivalent knowledge. 
The specific entry requirements for the programme stipulate that the applicant has acquired the knowledge and skills equivalent to a second-cycle degree in IMER or in another subject relevant to IMER. The specific requirements can also be met by the equivalent knowledge acquired within or outside the country. 
Transitional regulation: Those who met the basic entry requirements for third-cycle studies before July 1, 2007, will continue to do so up until the end of June 2015, according to the following: students with basic eligibility have completed a programme of higher education for at least 180 credits or the equivalent in Sweden or abroad
Basis of assessmentAccording to the Higher Education Ordinance 5 Chap. 5 §, importance is placed on the student's ability to incorporate his/her research with the doctoral programme. The research plan (see below) along with previously written papers and published material are important indicators of this ability. The assessment will also be based on how the research plan relates to relevant themes within MUSA. The ability to express oneself in written and spoken English is essential.
