China: 24 PhD Studentships in Energy Technologies

The International Doctoral Innovation Centre (IDIC) established in UNNC in 2012 is a venture represents an initial 170 million RMB (£17 million) investment by the University of Nottingham and its pioneering campus the University of Nottingham Ningbo China, Ningbo Bureau of Education, Ningbo Bureau of Science and Technology, the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council, UK and China’s Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST).
The IDIC’s Energy Research programme is closely associated with UNUK’s Centre in Efficient Fossil Energy Technologies (http://www.efetedc.ac.uk). Technological areas of interest include advanced combustion and gasification leading to cleaner power generation, coal-to-liquid transport fuels (petrol, diesel and higher fuel alcohols), non-conventional hydrocarbons, such as shale gas, the whole spectrum of carbon captures technologies covering integrated multi-pollutant control, enhanced oil/gas extraction technologies.
We are now recruiting up to 24 talented individuals on to a unique 4-year PhD programme to develop a new generation of multidisciplinary researchers to become future technological experts and business leaders in the Energy. Students will be based in the Centre in Efficient Fossil Energy Technologies located in the Jubilee Campus, Nottingham in the UK during the first year then move to The University of Nottingham Ningbo China at the end of the first year and stay there for 3 years where they will graduate. Each student will be supervised by a team of experts from both UNUK and UNNC.
We are interested in ambitious and talented students from a wide variety of backgrounds including Chemical, Mechanical, Environmental or Materials Engineering, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics or Geology, etc.
To join us, you must have an excellent first degree and preferably a Masters qualification or equivalent, you must be able to demonstrate the capability and show the potential of conducting world-class interdisciplinary research. You must also have achieved a minimum English language qualification IELTS of 6.5 with no less than 6.0 in any element or TOEFL iBT 88 with no element less than 19. In return, we offer:
  • Tuition fees waived in this fully-funded four-year PhD programme that integrates a leading-edge research project with research training in interdisciplinary skills.
  • A stipend of £800 per month whilst in the UK for the first year. ¥3000 - ¥5000 per month stipend plus free single-room accommodation for years 2 – 4 whilst at the University of Nottingham Ningbo China and one return flight between China and UK.
  • A personalised pathway through this programme that enables students to take taught modules during the first year to gain a balance of skills across key technology areas, future applications, academic writing, and human and societal issues.
  • Training in innovation and ingenuity to equip students for careers in industry, from global companies to start-ups.
  • A three month internship with a Company in China.
  • Regular seminars and meetings with industry representatives to develop contacts with future employers.
  • Supervision from international leaders in the associated disciplines from UNUK and UNNC.
  • Career guidance support tailored to individual needs.
