Max Planck Institute for the Science of Light -School of Engineering and Physical Sciences
Applications are invited for fully funded Ph.D. studentships in the School of Engineering & Physical Sciences at Heriot-Watt University (http://www.eps.hw.ac.uk/index.htm), Edinburgh (UK), to work on theoretical projects in nonlinear optics, solitons, plasmonics and pulse propagation in various photonic nanostructures, including photonic crystal fibers and waveguide arrays. The studentships provide funding to pay tuition fees and an adequate tax-free stipend for 3 years. Applicants should have the equivalent of at least a UK second class upper division (2.1) Honours degree in Physics or a related subject.
The ideal candidates will have a good background on classical Electromagnetism, Plasmonics, Fiber Optics, Quantum Mechanics and Condensed Matter Physics. Skills in mathematics and advanced programming (preferably with MATLAB, COMSOL, Fortran and Mathematica) are important. Location: The students will be based at the School of Engineering and Physical Sciences, Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh, Scotland (UK). It is however expected that the students will travel frequently to the Max Planck Institute for the Science of Light, Erlangen (Germany), due to the existing collaboration between Dr. Fabio Biancalana and the experimental group of Prof. Philip St.J. Russell, in the context of joint projects on the nonlinear properties of various kinds of photonic crystal fibers.
