Ireland: Funded PhD Studentship on Doped Graphene Electrodes for Solar Cells

Deadline: until position is not filled

PH.D.
Category:
Postgraduate
Job type:
Full-time
Job description:
Graphene, monolayer sheets of sp2-hybridised carbon atoms arranged in a honeycomb-like lattice structure, continues to attract intense research interest due to its unique electronic properties, with potential applications in nanoelectronics, sensing, and large-area transparent electrodes. Chemical vapour deposition (CVD) of graphene on transition metal foils is a key route towards large area transparent electrodes for solar cells.
Since graphene’s intrinsic resistance (~ 6 kilo-ohm/square) is much too high for transparent electrode applications, a key challenge lies in functionalising graphene surfaces to reduce the sheet resistance by charge transfer.
Applications are invited for a funded PhD studentship within the Nanotechnology group at Tyndall. The candidate’s work will focus on
  • Vapour- or liquid-phase non-covalent functionalisation for passivation and molecular doping of CVD graphene
  • Vapour- or liquid-phase functionalisation of silicon oxide, glass and plastic (e.g., PET) surfaces for substrate passivation and efficient transfer of graphene layers
  • Metrology of CVD graphene (Raman, AFM, SEM)
  • Fabrication and electrical characterisation of graphene-based electrodes and field-effect devices
Responsibilities:
Please apply via http://www.tyndall.ie/career/search, selecting reference number AQ-16 and following the instructions to complete the associated application form, attaching your cv and motivation letter. At this time, Tyndall National Institute does not require the assistance of recruitment agencies. Tyndall National Institute is an Equal Opportunities Employer.
