Joint PhD Scholarship Programme

Eligibility:


To be considered for the Joint PhD Scholarship Programme you must meet the following criteria:
a) Academic excellence of the student;
b) Strong aspiration/vision for studying the joint PhD programme, including demonstrable enthusiasm for overseas study;
c) Excellence of the proposed research project;
d) Added value to student and project of doing a joint PhD as opposed to a solely Imperial degree;
e) Suitability, capacity and quality of supervision (the student must have the support of two supervisors – one  from each university – willing  to supervise and undertake the requirements of a supervisor on the JDP Programme and who should have a strong pre-existing academic relationship);
f) Alignment of the proposed project with the department’s strategic aims and priorities.
This scholarship is intended to cover:
a) Tuition fees (home/EU fees only);
b) A living stipend (in line with RUCK rates);
c) Funding towards one return flight per academic year of the scholarship.
Scholarships will be awarded for a period of 3.5 years (42 months), subject to satisfactory progress.  The joint PhD programmes normally take 3 - 4 years to complete and students’ time must be equally shared between each institution. Tuition fees are payable to the home institution for the full duration of the PhD, and the partner institution receives no fee payments. 

 Imperial College PhD Scholarship Scheme

The Scheme aims to provide up to 50 research students with great potential the opportunity to work within their chosen research field with the support of an excellent supervisor.
  1. Successful candidates will receive the following financial support for up to 3.5 years:
    • Full funding for tuition fees
    • A stipend of £20,400 per annum to assist with living costs
    • A consumables fund of £2,000 per annum for the first 3 years of study
    1. Scholars will have access to a programme of career development and cohort activities delivered by a combination of their host department and the Graduate School.
    2. Support will be available to allow a high degree of interaction with other researchers (at other HEIs in the UK and abroad) and research users. This will provide valuable opportunities for networking and collaboration.
    Eligibility:


    1. Applications are accepted from talented candidates from Imperial College London, the UK and worldwide. There are no restrictions on nationality.
    2. Candidates must be among the highest achievers in their undergraduate cohort, and in receipt of, or due to receive a first class UK degree or equivalent.
    3. Candidates with Master’s qualifications should have achieved a distinction or, where this has yet to have been achieved, be able to provide evidence of high performance that will lead to a distinction. They should also hold a first class UK undergraduate degree or equivalent.
    4. Candidates with degrees from overseas institutions are strongly urged to determine if their scores/grades are equivalent to the relevant eligibility criteria.
    5. Prior to applying candidates must have made contact with a supervisor in an academic department at Imperial College London who has agreed to supervise their research project. Please note that supervisors are only permitted to supervise one scholar at any time.

    Beit Fellowship for Scientific Research

    A contribution of £15,000 towards maintenance costs.
    Applicants must hold a first class honours degree, or directly equivalent qualification, awarded by a recognised University in a territory which formed part of the British Empire on 20 September 1913 or which is currently part of the British Commonwealth.

    MRC DTP Studentships:

    MRC Studentships at Imperial College London are awarded to high calibre researchers who go on to conduct important research and gain recognition worldwide.  Research at Imperial is enabled by our world-class expertise and takes place in departments rated 5 and 5* in the last RAE. Research Projects are available across the College's research themes, with priority given to the following areas for the 2014 intake.

    • Genomic Medicine
    • Infection Immunity and Immunology
    • Stratified Medicine
    • Population Health
    PhD studies undertaken as part of this program, in the last round, include:
    • Optogenetic disruption of climbing fibre input to cerebellar cortex
    • Phylodynamic analysis of the transmission and evolution of polio virus and other RNA viruses
    • Genetics and epidemiology of schistosomiasis
    • Structure vs. function in the human brain
    Applicants are eligible for both the cost of tuition fees and a yearly stipend currently at £17,500 per annum for the October 2013 intake, over the course of the PhD programme and £15,740 per annum for the masters year and the six-month PhD writing-up period. There is also a conference allowance available, which is £300 p.a. for the duration of the PhD studentship.


    Biomedical science funding schemes:

    We support basic scientists, clinicians (including clinical psychologists, dentists and veterinarians) and public health researchers at all stages of their research career. Where appropriate, applications are encouraged from candidates trained in disciplines outside the biomedical sciences, but who are applying their expertise to biomedical problems.
