Denmark: PhD scholarship in Optimal Design in Nonlinear Vibrations

Deadline: 19th October 2012

Applications are invited for a 3-year PhD position starting February 2013, within the field of optimal design in nonlinear vibrations at the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Technical University of Denmark (the TopOpt group). The PhD-project is funded through the ERC starting grant INNODYN by the European Research Council.

INNODYN (Integrated analysis and design in nonlinear dynamics) is a four-year research project funded by the European Research Council through an ERC starting grant. The project aims at developing efficient techniques for analysis and optimization of the nonlinear dynamical performance of materials and structures.
The purpose of the PhD-project is to develop systematic and efficient methods for design of materials considering their nonlinear dynamic behavior. The project involves nonlinear dynamic finite element analysis, multi-scale analysis, and the use of advanced optimization techniques such as topology optimization.

QualificationsCandidates should have a master's degree in engineering or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to the master's degree in engineering and have relevant qualifications within one or more of the following areas:
  • Solid mechanics
  • Programming the finite element method
  • Analytical and numerical methods in nonlinear vibrations
  • Numerical optimization tools
The scholarships for the PhD degree are subject to academic approval, and the candidates will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes of DTU. For information about the general requirements for enrolment and the general planning of the scholarship studies, please see the DTU PhD Guide.
