University of Birmingham -Centre for Childhood Cancer Survivor Studies

College of Medical & Dental SciencesSchool of Health and Population Sciences
Supervision: Dr Raoul Reulen, Professor Michael Hawkins
We are seeking an individual with a strong background in disciplines related to epidemiology, with demonstrable experience of statistical methods. You will have a good first degree and preferably a Masters in a relevant discipline (e.g. Epidemiology, Medical Statistics, Applied Statistics).
The Centre has an international reputation for its research concerned with the risks of adverse health outcomes and social outcomes by survivors of childhood cancer, particularly the British Childhood Cancer Survivor Study (www.bccss.bham.ac.uk). Recently initiated by the Centre is the Teenage and Young Adult Cancer Survivor Study (TYACSS) including 170,000 individuals who survived at least 5 years following diagnosis of cancer at ages 15-39 years, in England and Wales, during 1971-2006. The TYACSS database was established with the purpose of investigating the risks of fatal and serious non-fatal adverse health outcomes subsequent to cancer treatment in teenagers and young adults. The established database will be used to specifically investigate the observed and expected risks of: specific causes of death, specific types of subsequent primary cancer and specific types of serious non-cancer morbidity (including cardiovascular, pulmonary, urological, hepatic and endocrine conditions).
You will work on analyses of the TYACSS data leading to peer-reviewed publications. The areas of research to be included within the PhD thesis will be determined by your preferences and interests as well as research priorities. This studentship will provide good training in all aspects of large-scale epidemiology, particularly statistical modelling. Staff from the Centre present at most important cancer survivorship conferences worldwide and you would have the opportunity to visit collaborators and present your research at national and international conferences. Students will be encouraged and supported in making applications for fellowship funding. Attendance on relevant internal and external training courses will also be encouraged.

Funding details: Full fees will be paid and there is a tax free stipend of £13,590 per annum.

Application details: Applications, electronically only, to include an up-to-date CV and a covering statement which addresses all relevant experience to the studentship, future career plans and the earliest you could start the PhD. Please send your application to Dr Raoul Reulen, email: r.c.reulen@bham.ac.uk
