Current mobile phone systems are not energy efficient: there is little real time monitoring of local network demand, so transmitters may operate at higher power levels than required especially during low demand periods. Furthermore, to evaluate the network performance, extensive drive test is conducted which means a significant waste of energy and a huge production of CO2. This project aims to develop an innovative eco-friendly and energy-efficient novel method for mobile network monitoring that can reliably report on the performance of mobile networks and completely circumvent the need for drive test. It will also enable the operator to manage the network much more efficiently and accurately, so there is no excessive transmitter power at any point. The PhD candidate should have at least a 2.1 B.Eng degree in EEE.
