The Wolfson School of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering is one
of the largest and most successful engineering departments in the UK,
having an established reputation for excellence in research and
teaching, as well as strong links with industry.
Applications are invited for a fully-funded PhD studentship within the Centre for Sustainable Manufacturing and Reuse/Recycling Technologies (SMART) which resides within the Wolfson School of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering.
The research focuses on the vital area of energy consumption within manufacturing companies who are under increasing pressure to improve their sustainability by reducing reliance on non-renewable energy consumption, whilst maintaining or improving productivity, quality and profitability. A highly effective method of reducing reliance on fossil based fuel is to minimise energy consumption through process, operational and design improvements. For any given manufacturing process there is theoretical minimum energy requirement (e.g. heat for casting) beyond which improvements cannot be made. However, there is an opportunity to achieve a further reduction in energy consumption at the factory level, through the recapture and recycling of energy used for manufacturing processes.
The project will primarily seek to understand where energy recovery hotspots exist across a range of manufacturing processes and establish a framework for measuring energy reuse potential within factories. In addition, through the identification and development of specific energy harnessing technologies, the project will provide real-world, usable results for today's manufacturers.
Prospective candidates should have or expect to obtain a good degree (1st or 2:1) or Masters' qualification in Engineering, Manufacturing, Physical Sciences or a related subject and have a strong interest in industrial sustainability and/or energy systems. The studentships provide a living allowance of at least £16,000 per annum tax free, and all fees are paid. The duration of the project is three years and is expected to include international travel.
Applicants seeking additional information are invited to contact Dr Elliot Woolley (e-mail e.b.woolley@lboro.ac.uk ).
