Deadline: 23 July 2012
Nationality: International

The Wolfson School of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering is one of the largest and most successful engineering departments in the UK, having an established reputation for excellence in research and teaching, as well as strong links with industry.
Applications are invited to fill a fully funded PhD studentship within the Centre for Sustainable Manufacturing and Reuse/Recycling Technologies (SMART) at Loughborough to study the issues associated with the use of renewable materials in manufacturing. Typically these will include: current and future availability, source and supply, handling and processing, substitution and selection, application and use, waste and end of life management.
The use of renewable materials, particularly in the manufacturing of consumer products, has gained momentum driven by a combination of market and legislative pressure to be more sustainable and produce 'less environmentally damaging' products. However renewable material use is only sustainable if it does not exceed the ability of the system to replenish itself. It is therefore essential that we fully understand what the capacity limitations are and then, taking a holistic life cycle approach, are able to assess the best material for the most appropriate applications. During this project, a range of research areas will be investigated including the global production capacity of renewable materials, technical and commercial impacts on existing production processes and plants, and the tools required by manufacturers to support material selection and assessment.
Prospective candidates will have a good honours degree (1st or 2:1) in Sustainable Manufacturing, Engineering or another related discipline, and good communication skills. The studentships provide a living allowance of at least £16,000 per annum tax free, and all fees are paid. The duration of the project is three years and is expected to include international travel.
Applicants seeking additional information are invited to contact James Colwill (e-mail j.a.colwill@lboro.ac.uk ).
