PhD position Vehicular Networking for Fully Electrical Vehicles

  •  Nationality: All
  • Deadline: July 12th 2012
  • University of Twente

De uitdaging / The challenge
One of the research areas of the DACS group (Design and Analysis of Communication Systems) at the University of Twente is Vehicular Networking. Vehicular networks allow cars to communicate between themselves and with roadside infrastructure to make road traffic safer, more efficient, and “greener”. Within the Mobility 2.0 project, the DACS group, together with partners from a number of European countries, will develop and test a cooperative commuting assistant for fully electrical vehicles, resulting in more reliable and energy-efficient electro-mobility. We are looking for a PhD candidate who will research, design, and implement protocols for wireless communications between fully electrical vehicles, nomadic devices, and roadside infrastructure to exchange information regarding a.o. vehicle battery status and charging sport availability. Especially, extensions to the ITS-G5 standard, which can be considered as a variant to wireless LAN, optimized for vehicular networking, need to be defined. The results of the work will be integrated in a prototype system that will be tested at test sites in Barcelona and Reggio Emilia.

Ons aanbod / Our offer
As a PhD candidate you will be appointed in a full-time position (38 hours/week) for a period of maximum four years and at the end you should have completed your PhD thesis. Gross monthly salary for the PhD position range from € 2.042,- gross per month in the first year up to € 2.612,- gross per month in the fourth year (in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities). In addition to this, we offer a holiday allowance (amounts to 8%), an end-of-year bonus (amounts to 8.3%), various sporting and cultural facilities at reduced rate, medical insurance at a reduced rate etc.

Your main responsibility will be to carry out research, but you will be given the opportunity to acquire some teaching experience. We offer our PhD students the opportunity to broaden their knowledge by joining international exchange programs, by participating in national and international conferences and workshops, and by visiting other research institutes and universities worldwide.
