Netherlands: 2 PhD Positions: Integrated Design & Control of Hybrid Ship Systems

Deadline: 28 Feb. 2014

Job description

We seek two talented and ambitious PhD candidates for a challenging, multidisciplinary research project on design and control of a new generation of ships. The PhD positions are defined within the framework of the NWO/STW Maritime programme "ShipDrive: A Novel Methodology for Dynamic Integrated Modelling, Control and Optimisation of Hybrid Ship Systems".

Within this project the main objectives are:
• to define a novel design and optimisation methodology for integrating hybrid propulsion and energy systems on board ships, and
• to define control strategies based on functional criteria for hybrid ship systems on several control layers.

The design and control criteria will include running cost of the ship asset, fuel consumption and influence on the environment in terms of emissions and radiated (underwater) noise.

In the project, the potential of the proposed approaches will be assessed in the specific and demanding maritime environment. This makes the research both innovative and highly applicable to actual issues in the maritime industry, the government and society.

The new researchers working on this project will have the opportunity to work in a multidisciplinary team of academic experts, as well as with leading industrial partners. This will allow the realisation of new, innovative, fundamental design and control contributions as well as the opportunity to demonstrate their practical relevance via state-of-the-art demonstrators.
