Netherlands: PhD position Heterogeneous Mission-critical Communication Networks

Deadline: 15Jan. 2014

Job description

Mission-critical communication networks, such as used by the police, ambulances and fire brigades, are generally based on legacy technologies. In order to utilize the advances in wireless communications and networking that have enabled the rapid growth of mobile data services, the next generation of mission-critical communication networks is expected to be based on standard technologies, such as 4G cellular, IEEE 802.11, and Internet protocols. Especially, the combination of multiple technologies, including their infrastructureless operation mode (e.g., LTE-direct), is promising for highly resilient networks. However, the specific services and requirements of mission critical networks demand for new concepts to combine and utilize these technologies. In particular, combining mobile multicasting, multiple technologies, and high resilience and security in a Heterogeneous Mission-critical  Communication Network gives important new research challenges.
To investigate these challenges, a new European project has started (called  SALUS), in which sixteen leading european research groups will  collaborate.  The DACS (Design and Analysis of Communication Systems) group at the University of Twente, the Netherlands, is partner within this new project and will investigate networking solutions for heterogeneous mission-critical networks. In particular we are interested in combining multicasting, mobility, and resilience in such networks. We are looking for a PhD candidate who will participate in this project and perform research in the area of network protocols. It is expected that the PhD candidate will strongly collaborate with the other European partners within this project. Within the DACS group, the PhD candidate will work closely together with other PhD candidates active in similar areas.
