UK: NPL/University of Surrey Joint Studentship

Deadline: 14 August 2013

Project Title: Millimetre-wave Smart AntennasUniversity of Surrey
Research Group: Antennas
Applications are invited for a funded three-year PhD studentship starting on 1st October 2013 to investigate the novel design and measurement methodologies of millimetre-wave smart antennas. Millimetre-wave smart antennas using, for example printed reflectarrays, are a key technology for satellite communications, wireless local area networks and radars. At millimetre-wave bands they offer multi-gigabit speeds to complement existing Wi-Fi capabilities and enable new cutting-edge wireless applications. The main objectives of this project include novel designs, implementations and measurement techniques of millimetre-wave smart antennas. It will involve antenna design, EM modelling and simulation, RF/millimetre-wave circuit design, DSP algorithms, antenna measurement methodologies.

Lead Supervisor Name: Prof Craig Underwood
Project Description
Candidates should hold a 1st class or 2.1 honours degree in Engineering, Physics, or a related field. Overseas students with equivalent degrees will also be considered. The candidate will preferably have a Master degree with distinction and research backgrounds in one or more of the following areas: antenna design, RF circuit design, RF test and measurement, microwave materials, antenna measurement, and electromagnetics.
The student will be jointly supervised by Dr Tian Hong Loh at The National Physical Laboratory (NPL), Prof Craig Underwood and Dr Tim Brown at University of Surrey, UK. NPL is the UK’s National Measurement Institute and is a world-leading centre of excellence in developing and applying the most accurate measurement standards, science and technology. The novel measurement techniques will be explored in the small and smart antenna test range at NPL, which allows non-invasive antenna measurements. Surrey Space Centre has extensive experience in the designs of satellite communication antennas, smart antennas, phased arrays RF and microwave wireless systems.
Informal enquiries should be directed to Prof Craig Underwood, email: c.underwood@surrey.ac.uk copied to k.collar@surrey.ac.uk.
Funding:
The award will be for a period of 3 years and include Home/Overseas tuition fees plus a stipend (approx £13,590 p.a). Applications are welcome from both the UK and internationally.
