The Tissue Regeneration Department (http://www.utwente.nl/tnw/tr/)
main goal is to understand the mechanisms controlling tissue
regeneration and develop technology to improve the process. The research
group comprises more than 30 scientists from all over the world.

De uitdaging / The challenge |
Tendons and ligaments are often subjected to extreme mechanical
load eventually leading to injuries. Unfortunately, not all tendons and
ligaments possess intrinsic healing capacity. Very often, the damaged
tissues must be replaced using autologous or allogeneic tissue. In the
first case, donor site morbidity and limited availability are the main
drawbacks whereas in the second case, there is the risk of disease
transmission. Whatever the solution, the recovering time usually spans
more than 6 months and there is a chance of failure associated with the
procedure. New strategies are obviously needed to improve the procedure
and shorten the recovery time.
This project will focus on the development of new technologies to
improve tendon and ligament regeneration. Special emphasis will be
devoted to the development of functionalized surfaces capable to control
cell fate towards tendon and ligament.
