Sweden: PhD position in Molecular Biology

Deadline: 4 Jan. 2013

PhD position in Molecular Biology

at the Department of Molecular Biology

Project description
We are looking for a dedicated student who is interested in gene function in the field of molecular genetics. The study topic concerns the gene Anaplastic lymphoma kinase (Alk) which belongs to the Receptor Tyrosine Kinase Protein family and is essential for the development of intestinal muscle and visual development in Drosophila melanogaster. The intracellular signalling pathways and activation mechanisms downstream of Alk activation will be investigated in eukaryotic model systems. Furthermore, the regulation of expression of Alk protein at various stages of development will be examined. Methods employed in this work include genetic, cell biological, biochemical, molecular biological and histological methods. For more information please refer to http://www.molbiol.umu.se/department-of-molecular-biology/research/researchers/ruth-palmer/.

Admission requirements
Applicants must hold or anticipate receiving within the next months a University degree equivalent to a European University Master degree in the field of biomedicine, molecular biology, biochemistry or tumour biology (240 ECTS credits) of which 60 ECTS should be on an advanced level (Master level).

In addition, the position requires a minimum of 30 ECTS in chemistry with at least 7,5 ECTS in Biochemistry, 45 ECTS in the major areas of biology or molecular biology with at least 7,5 ECTS in genetics and 22,5 ECTS in microbiology, physiology or cell and molecular biology. In addition, it is required that at least 45 ECTS are at advanced level in cell and molecular biology, including independent work of at least 15 ECTS.

The applicant needs to be skilled in both oral and written communication in English.
Practical experience in Drosophila genetics and molecular biology and microscopy are merits.

Application
A complete application should include: Introductory letter with a statement of research interest, CV and copies of degree certificates including documentation of completed academic courses and their grades, contact information of two references and copies of thesis work and publications.
