Denmark: PhD Project Stochastic Energy Systems

Deadline: 26 Nov. 2012

DTU Informatics would like to invite applications for a 3-year PhD position starting December 15th 2012. The project is financed by the iPower project, a grant from the Danish Strategic Research Council, and DTU Informatics.

Project Description
The PhD project is related to the SPIR research and innovation project called iPower, which focuses on methods and technologies for integrating large amounts of renewables in modern power systems.

During the PhD project the focus will be on probabilistic forecasting, but with a special attention on how the probabilistic forecasts can be used for optimal operations of power systems. A secondary objective is to develop methods and principles for finding the optimal spinning reserve for power systems with a large penetration of renewables.

The PhD student is expected to participate in the iPower project meetings, and to collaborate with relevant institutions and companies within this project.

Requirements
Candidates must have a master degree in computational science and engineering (CSE), applied mathematics, or engineering, or equivalent academic qualifications. The successful applicant should have a strong background in stochastic optimization / stochastic programming and its applications to power systems. Candidates should have good background in statistics and operations research. Some background in programming is also an advantage. Furthermore, good command of the English language is essential.

Salary and appointment terms
The salary and appointment terms are consistent with the current Danish rules for PhD degree students.

Further Information
Further information concerning the project can be obtained from Professor Henrik Madsen.

Further information concerning the application is available at the DTU Informatics PhD homepage, the DTU Informatics Graduate School ITMAN homepage or by contacting the responsible ITMAN Graduate School coordinator: Ulla Jensen, DTU Informatics, phone: + 45 4525 3359.
