New Zealand: University of Auckland Doctoral Scholarships

Selection process:

  • Selection will be based on academic merit (measured by the grade point average or grade point equivalent assessed over the applicant's two most recent years of equivalent full-time study), quality of research proposal, CV, referee's reports and alignment with the faculty's strategic plan.

How do students apply?
Applications for the Scholarships must be made on the Scholarships Office application form available from the Scholarships Office website at www.auckland.ac.nz/scholarships. The completed application form is to be submitted to the Scholarships Office. Application dates vary. Refer to the doctoral page of the above website for dates. Faculties will assess applications at regular intervals and submit recommendations to the Scholarships Sub-Committee.

Decision makers
The Scholarships will be awarded by the University of Auckland Council on the recommendation of the Scholarships Sub-Committee and the Education Committee.

How and when do students learn of the decision?
By letter, from the relevant Faculty and/or the Scholarships Office.

What conditions are attached to acceptance of this award?
In addition, to be eligible to pay domestic PhD fees, recipients who are permanent residents of New Zealand, Australian citizens or international students may only be resident outside of New Zealand for a maximum total of twelve months over the period of their enrolment in their doctoral degree. To comply with the full-time study requirement in Regulation 3, the amount of additional and paid work a Scholar may undertake either inside or outside the University shall not exceed a total of 500 hours per scholarship year. International students must also refer to Note xiii. A University of Auckland Doctoral Scholarship may not be held concurrently with any other University of Auckland-funded doctoral scholarship, or any postgraduate scholarship awarded by the New Zealand Vice-Chancellor's Committee, Tertiary Education Commission, New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Asian Development Bank, Education New Zealand or any foreign government-funded scholarships. However, it may be held with any other study award or grant where the regulations for that award or grant permit and where The University of Auckland Council so approves. If the value of co-tenured scholarships exceeds $35,000 the emolument for the University of Auckland Doctoral Scholarship will be reduced to limit the co-tenured total to $35,000. A Scholarship may be terminated by the University of Auckland Council should it receive a report from the Education Committee that a candidate's academic progress is unsatisfactory. Payments include a stipend of up to $25,000 pa to be paid in fortnightly instalments plus compulsory annual doctoral fees. Payments to international students who are eligible to study under the domestic fees policy will also include the compulsory international student health cover.
