Netherlands : 3 PhD positions in Global Governance

The Graduate School of Arts and Social Sciences of Maastricht University offers three PhD positions within the NWO VIDI project.

Tasks
The successful candidates will pursue a PhD project within the broad subject area of peer reviews among states in international organizations. At the same time, they will contribute to the research project “No carrots, no sticks: How do peer reviews among states acquire authority in global governance?” This project researches the conditions under which the recommendations that states make to each other through peer reviews develop authority despite the lack of incentives or enforcement mechanisms. The project will look at three different international organizations (EU; OECD; United Nations family) and three policy areas (the fight against corruption; environmental and energy policy; economic policies).


Requirements:
We seek candidates with strong academic abilities and the ambition to become excellent researchers. You have completed a research master (MSc, MPhil) or an equivalent 2-year degree in International Relations, Political Science, Law or a neighbouring discipline. Outstanding candidates with a 1-year regular master can be accepted in exceptional cases. You possess strong analytical skills and the capacity to work independently and well-organized. Ideally, you have already been involved in academic research projects. You are willing to travel for the fieldwork and valorization activities involved in the project. You are fluent in written and spoken English. Additional language competences (in particular French) are an asset. While the working language in the project is English, you will have
the opportunity to follow Dutch courses.

4. An indication of research interests within the framework of the project (1 page A4).
