UK: Marie Curie Reseacher, Discrete element modeling of ribbon milling

Deadline: 28 June 2013

Marie Curie Early Stage Researcher (ESR)University of Surrey -Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences
Ref No. IPROCOM-ESR7
Supervisor: Prof. Chuan-Yu Wu
Ref: 9322
Project Title: Discrete element modeling of ribbon milling
Salary (living and mobility allowance): from £36,000 p.a. (depending on employer deductions, personal circumstance and exchange rate to be notified by the EC).
For 3 years, to start on 1st October 2013
We are seeking a full time postgraduate researcher with research interests in computer modelling, discrete element methods (DEM), particle technology, and pharmaceutical engineering to join the Department of Chemical and Process Engineering where you will work on DEM modelling of ribbon milling, a research project within the IPROCOM consortium funded by European Commission under the FP7-PEOPLE-2012-ITN Programme.
IPROCOM (The Development of in silico process models for roll compaction) is a multidisciplinary and inter-sectoral consortium aiming to develop robust in silico process models that can be used to predict the properties of intermediate (ribbons/granules) and final products (tablets/pellets/components) based on the properties of individual particles and to provide structured training for 15 researchers within a collaborative research network involving 10 full partners and 4 associate partners from 8 EU countries,
For this Fellowship, you will explore the fundamental microscopic mechanisms of ribbon milling using an in-house DEM code, and work with other IPROCOM researchers to validate the DEM modeling and to provide necessary input information for population balance modeling to be performed by another IPROCOM researcher.
You must be a good team player in possession of a good degree in Engineering, Materials Science, Physics or a related area. The successful candidate will have a keen interest in DEM modelling, some experience in computer modeling and simulations and a good understanding of particle mechanics. It is also expected that you will participate a wide range of networking activities including inter-sectoral secondments, IPROCOM training schools, workshops, short courses, dedicated sessions at international meetings, and network conference.
Eligibility: This fellowship is offered in the context of a Marie Curie Initial Training Network and transnational mobility is a key element of eligibility. Therefore your eligibility for the post is determined by Marie Curie terms and conditions.
This post is open to any nationals but you must not have been resident in the UK for more than 12 months in the past 3 years (prior to 1st October 2013), not have been awarded a doctorate and be in the first 4 years of their research careers.
This post may also be suitable either as first salaried positions for researchers currently studying for a PhD that will be awarded after 1st October 2013 or for students undertaking a first doctoral degree. In either case you will be registered for a PhD at the University of Surrey.
How to apply:please contact Miss Karen Truss, Assistant HR Officer on tel: +44 (0) 1483 686060 or by email: k.truss@surrey.ac.uk  Please quote Post Ref No. 9322
The application deadline is 28th June 2013, however early applications are strongly encouraged and may result in an early decision. Informal enquiries to Professor Chuan-Yu (Charley) Wu, c.y.wu@surrey.ac.uk
