UK: Research Assistant (Marie Curie Early Stage Researcher) at Department of Mechanical Engineering

Deadline: 2 November 2012

Imperial College London -Department of Mechanical Engineering, Energy Technology for Sustainable Development Group

Fixed Salary: £32,100 - £38,700 per annum
Fixed-term appointment for 19 months
The Energy Technology for Sustainable Development Group wishes to appoint a Research Assistant (Early Stage Researcher) to conduct research into process turbomachinery experimental performance and monitoring at Imperial College London.
The person appointed will be joining a dynamic, multidisciplinary team committed to excellence working on a Marie Curie Initial Training Network research program entitled "energy savings from smart operation of electrical, process and mechanical equipment". The research program for this post will be carried out in the Mechanical Engineering in close collaboration with the Centre for Process Systems Engineering in the Chemical Engineering Department (under Prof Thornhill) where a second post will be held. The Initial Training Network has nine partners both from industry and academia across Europe.
The overall aim of the post will be to measure the performance of highly loaded centrifugal compressors under different conditions of erosion and fouling. It will help to make more representative models than are currently used and give insights into performance degradation. The models will be sufficiently detailed to capture the main physical parameters and yet be of sufficient low order to be incorporated in industrial performance monitoring which will necessarily be "real-time". Experimental measurements to validate the reduced order models will be gathered with collaboration of BASF.
Benefits of this Marie Curie contract include mobility allowance, career development allowance and a travel allowance (for travel home and to meetings).
Applicants should have a good undergraduate degree (or equivalent) in Engineering. In addition the candidate is expected to have knowledge and background in turbomachinery aerodynamics and modelling.  There are particular eligibility requirements as specified by Framework VII Marie Curie multi-beneficiary Initial Training Networks.  Further information and the full terms and conditions regarding eligibility can be found at:
