The Electrical Energy Management Group at the University of Bristol is a leader in applied research into power electronics for microrenewables. The Group is currently seeking to recruit a Research Assistant in Low Power Electronic Design. The researcher will work on electronic systems for time-varying renewable power sources such as energy harvesters, including the recently awarded EPSRC-funded project "SAVVIE: Staying alive in variable, intermittent, low-power environments". An important challenge is to design robust and reliable power management and control for situations where there is a variable, unreliable source of energy. Application areas of interest to the Group and Industrial Sponsors include medical sensing and environmental monitoring.
The successful candidate will be expected to take a leadership role in key research strands and have responsibility for interactions with key academic and industrial collaborators. This will include publishing in peer reviewed journal papers and presenting at conferences. Candidates will ideally have relevant experience and background in one or more of the following areas: power electronics, energy harvesting electronics, microelectronic design, integrated circuit design, digital and analogue electronic design. A typical candidate will be expected to hold a PhD degree in a related area.
If successful, you may be appointed either on a fixed-term or an open-ended contract depending on the extent of your previous relevant research experience. Three years' appropriate and relevant experience at another higher education institution would normally lead to an appointment on an open-ended contract.
