UK:Sustainable Marine Resource Management (232)

Application deadline

  • 6th August 2012
Developing the scientific tools to provide assessments. Inshore waters traditionally provided coastal communities with their main livelihood, for example though the use of fisheries resources, tourism, recreation etc. The sustainability of such coastal communities has been undermined by intensive exploitation and increased degradation of inshore environments. Increased leisure use of inshore waters, a greater appreciation of 'locally sourced' food, a drive towards sustainable fisheries and the increased protection afforded coastal areas have changed the economic landscape for coastal communities in recent years. This project will develop and test a tool-box of techniques to assess the sustainability of human activities in the inshore marine environment. The initial focus will be on biological sustainability of shellfish resources but the project will also consider the social and economic aspects of sustainability. Development of the tool-box will involve sampling, literature review, modelling of stock dynamics and widespread consultation with local stakeholders on the issues that they face.
