In this project the successful applicant will study for a PhD, while characterising and developing a novel solar cell technology in collaboration with a local company. Work undertaken will centre on the electrical and opto-electrical characterisation of the material used in the solar cell, determining key properties for the first time and applying this new knowledge to devise more efficient solar cells. This research will predominantly be carried out in the state of the art labs and cleanroom facilities in the Physics department, with its nationally leading reputation for research. The project will lead to a permanent position in the company where the PhD student can be the first of several new recruits. Applicants should have a first or upper second class degree in physics, or be expected to gain one at the end of the current academic year.
