Norway: PhD position in Bionanotechnology (biomaterials for bone tissue engineering)

Deadline: 15-08-2012

A PhD position within the field of Bionanotechnology (biomaterials for bone tissue engineering) is available at the Department of Physics. The appointments have duration of 3 years with the possibility of until 1 year extension with 25% teaching duties in agreement with the department.

The position is organized at the Department of Physics. Currently, there are 26 professors, 10 associate professors, 6 adjunct professors, 75 PhD research fellows and 25 postdoctoral positions appointed at the Department of Physics.

The PhD candidate will work on the project entitled “Mineralized, hierarchical, bioinspired materials for tissue engineering” which is financed by Norwegian Research Council. Proposed project aims at using a multidisciplinary material science and fabrication approach to address important challenges related to hierarchical, hydrogel-based biomaterials, with specific focus on materials for bone tissue engineering. We propose a novel approach to make complex, organic-inorganic composites with hierarchical structure and inherent anisotropy, making use of controlled deposition of minerals within gel network. Proposed approach is inspired by the degree of control achieved by nature in making composite materials through biomineralisation. Research will be conducted in collaboration with the Department of Biotechnology and the Department of Chemical Engineering at NTNU and partners in the UK and Germany.

The appointment of the PhD fellow will be made according to Norwegian guidelines for universities and university colleges and to the general regulations regarding university employees. Applicants must agree to participate in organized doctoral study programs within the period of the appointment and have to be qualified for the PhD-study. A contract will be drawn up regarding the period of appointment and work-related duties.

The national labour force must reflect the composition of the population to the greatest possible extent.

The start salary for the PhD research fellow is set at level 50, NOK 416 600 (before tax) in the Norwegian state salary scale. 2% of the salary will be deducted at source as a mandatory premium to the Norwegian State Pension Fund.
