Netherlands:Job Nikhef - Marie Curie Early Stage Researcher Fellowship (ESR9)

Deadline: 7th October 2012
Natural Sciences.

Job description

ATLAS is one of the two large general purpose detectors at the LHC at CERN, Geneva. We are developing a new inner tracker to replace the current one for the LHC Upgrade around 2022. The goal is to improve the inner tracker performance depite the very high particle rates expected. The detector will create about 100 kW of heat, to be removed by a very low radiation-length cooling system. Bi-phase CO2 cooling can remove the heat with a very small heat pipe, but also presents many technical challenges that can benefit from improved understanding and models. We are looking for a particle physicist or engineer keen to develop all aspects of the cooling systems for the new ATLAS inner tracker. This can include plant design, development of fluid transport lines, and the development of the integrated local-support/cooling-system of the future inner tracker sensors and their associated electronics. Measurements of CO2 flow and cooling properties are needed to test and improve our models. Thermal FEA modelling of the local supports, their prototyping and performance measurement will be carried out. The researcher will work in an international team including researchers from the Universtities of Wuppertal and Geneva.

Research

Prototyping of high-efficiency CO2 cooling systems.

Requirements

To be eligible, applicants must posess a Master's degree in mechanical engineering, cooling engineering, or physics. For this Early Stage Research Fellowship, the Master's degree must have been obtained within the past 5 years. Applicants should also have good knowledge of English, both written and oral, as the successful candidate will be asked to submit reports and the doctoral thesis in English. The Post is offered in the context of a Marie Curie Initial Training Network, and transnational mobility is a key element of eligibility. As such, applications will only be accepted from candidates who have spent less than 12 months in the Netherlands within the last three years. Candidates’ eligibility for the post is determined by Marie Curie terms and conditions.
