Singapore: PhD Scholarships at National University of Singapore

NUS Research Scholarship:

Eligibility:

  1. Have graduated with an undergraduate degree with first class or second-upper (or equivalent);
  2. At the time of award of the Scholarship, must have been offered admission as a candidate for a full-time higher degree by research at NUS; and
  3. Students must be eligible for MOE Subsidy*

Award Details:

  1. Research Scholars will be given a monthly stipend and a tuition fee subsidy. For Research Scholars in a Masters/Graduate Programme, the monthly stipend is S$1,500. For Research Scholars in a PhD programme, monthly stipends for Singapore Citizens, Singapore Permanent Residents and International Students are S$2,500, S$2,200 and S$2,000 respectively. For student intake prior to August 2010, the monthly stipend for Singapore Citizens is S$2,300.
  2. The scholarship will provide the full tuition fee subsidy for Singaporean Citizens, Singapore Permanent Residents and International Students

Award Period:
The Scholarship is tenable for an initial 1 year and, subject to the Research Scholar's satisfactory progress, renewable annually up to a maximum of 1-2.5 years for Masters candidates and 3-4 years for PhD candidates, as determined by the University.

President's Graduate Fellowship:

Eligibility:
The PGF is open to incoming PhD students and current NUS Research Scholars who have passed the PhD Qualifying Examination (QE), with the exception of SMA and NGS students.

  1. Have graduated with an undergraduate degree with first class or second-upper (or equivalent);
  2. At the time of award of the Scholarship, must have been offered admission as a candidate for a full-time higher degree by research at NUS; and
  3. Students must be eligible for MOE Subsidy*. 

Award Amount:

  1. A monthly stipend throughout the period of award for international student is S$3,000.
  2. Tuition fees at the University;
  3. A one-off air travel allowance for 1 one-way ticket of up to S$750 on economy class and up to 20 kg baggage per trip (only for newly registered overseas students’ trip from home country to Singapore to commence study);
  4. A one-off settling allowance of S$1,000 (only for overseas students)

Award Period
The award is tenable for an initial 1 year and, subject to the awardee's satisfactory progress, renewable annually up to a maximum of 4 years. For candidates who were transferred from a NUS Research Scholarship to a PGF, the total period of their tenure on both schemes must not exceed 4 years.

Lee Kong Chian Graduate Scholarships:

Eligibility:


  1. Have graduated with an undergraduate degree with first class or second-upper (or equivalent);
  2. Be an incoming new PhD student not currently matriculated;
  3. At the time of award of the Scholarship, must have been offered admission as a candidate for a full-time higher degree by research at NUS and;
  4. Students must be eligible for MOE Subsidy*. 

Award Amount:


  1. A monthly stipend of S$3,300;
  2. Tuition and Miscellaneous Student Fees at NUS;
  3. An annual book allowance of S$500;
  4. A one-off air travel allowance of 2 return tickets of up to S$4,000 (only for overseas students subject to a maximum of S$2,000 per return ticket on economy class and 20 kg baggage per trip); and
  5. A one-off laptop allowance of S$1,500.

Award Period:

The award is tenable for 1 year in the first instance; but subject to the scholar’s satisfactory progress, it may be renewed annually. The maximum period of award is 4 years.

A*Star Graduate Scholarship (AGS):

Eligibility:

  • Singaporeans and other nationals intending to take up Singapore Citizenship.

  • Applicants must satisfy criteria for and seek admission into NUS PhD programme.

  • Applicants must have obtained at least a Second Upper Class Honours Degree or its equivalent in relevant disciplines.

  • Applicants must have good 'O' and 'A' level track records. Polytechnic students with a Diploma with Merit will also be considered.

  • Applicants with a strong interest in a research career are preferred.

  • Applicants may submit GRE scores (if available) to be included in the overall assessment of their scholarship application. 


Terms:

  • Monthly stipend up to 4 years of the PhD studies, or up to date of graduation, whichever is earlier.

  • Payment of full tuition fees or up to date of graduation, whichever is earlier. 

  • Other allowances including
  1. computer allowance
  2. thesis allowance
  3. book allowance
  4. conference allowance.
  • Opportunities for overseas attachment.




Service Commitment:
  • Singaporeans (at the point of award):  No service commitment

  • Non-Singaporeans (at the point of award):  2-year service in Singapore-based companies* without commitment to any specific organization. The area of work should preferably be in Biomedical Sciences, Physical Sciences or Engineering.

  • AGS NUS scholars who are subsequently awarded the AGS (PDF) for overseas post-doctoral training will have a service commitment^ of 1 year with A*STAR.

NGS Scholarship (NGSS):

Eligibility:
  • Opens worldwide.

  • Graduates with a passion for cross-disciplinary research in science, engineering, computing, and related aspects of medicine.

  • Graduates with at least 2nd Upper Honours, or equivalent qualifications.

  • GRE is compulsory for students applying from overseas. Only strongly recommended for graduates from local institutions, e.g. NUS or NTU.

  • TOEFL is compulsory (ONLY applicable for applicants whose native tongue or medium of undergraduate instruction is not in English).


Terms:

  • Monthly stipend of S$3,200 up to 4 years of the PhD studies, or up to date of graduation, whichever is earlier.

  • Other allowances include
  1. computer allowance
  2. book allowance
  3. conference allowance.
  • Student must commit to PhD from the outset, cannot exit with MSc.

SMART Graduate Fellowship:

Eligibility:A student must:
  • have graduated with an undergraduate degree with first class or second-upper (or equivalent);
  • be an incoming new PhD student not currently enrolled in a PhD programme;
  • have a research interest that fits within one or more of the projects currently being carried out in a SMART Interdisciplinary Research Group (IRG).

  • and co-supervision by an MIT and NTU/NUS/SMU/SUTD faculty.
