Sweden: PhD Student in Biophysical Chemistry

Deadline: 8 Jan. 2013

Research and graduate education at the department of chemistry and molecular biology comprises a wide scientific field from the atomic and molecular levels all the way through cells to intact organisms. Much of the phenomena studied here impact on our natural environment and living systems. We participate in undergraduate programs in chemistry, molecular biology, medicinal chemistry, biology, marine sciences, and pharmacy. A third cycle education at our department will lead to a Ph.D. in Natural sciences, natural siences with a specialization in Chemistry or natural sciences with a specialisation in biology. Ph.D studies comprises four years at the post graduate level. The time period can be extended to 5 years in total through teaching and/or other departmental duties.

The Westenhoff group is a young research activity with the goal to uncover structural dynamics of proteins and photovoltaic materials. For this purpose we develop novel time-resolved laser spectroscopy and tools based on time-resolved x-ray diffraction. Prof. Westenhoff has recently been awarded several highly competitive research grants for this purpose.

Job assignments

We are looking for a PhD Student with interest in multidimensional laser spectroscopy. You will build up and use a 2D infrared laser spectroscopy facility for the study of structural dynamics in proteins and solar cell materials. Ideally you have a documented strong experimental background in physics or physical chemistry. The project is performed in collaboration with international partners. Thus, documented excellent communicational and organizational skills are also considered a plus. Research experience in biochemistry, biophysics, nonlinear optics, or time-resolved spectroscopy will be considered as a merit. Experience with building or running complex scientific instrumentation, especially in the area of femtosecond lasers, are regarded as a merit.

Training will be in state-of-the-art methods in membrane protein biochemistry, time-resolved two-dimensional visible and infrared spectroscopy, and/or computational analysis.

Eligibility

The qualifications for education on a doctoral level are: degree in advanced level, at least 240 university points, of which 60 are on an advanced level, or in an other way acquired similar knowledge.
