Sweden: DOCTORAL STUDENTSHIP IN ORGANIC CHEMISTRY

Deadline: 28 Dec. 2012

Type of employment: Limit of tenure, 2017-01-31
Extent: 100 %
Location: Department of Chemistry, Centre for Analysis and Synthesis, Lund
First day of employment: 2013-02-01
Official Records Number: NPA 2012/764

Job assignments

The project concerns the development of methods for organic synthesis of novel low-molecular inhibitors and antagonists of medically relevant proteins, such as galectins and enzymes involved in DNA synthesis, as well as molecules to be used as tools in studies of biological phenomena and mechanisms. One additional focus is to apply physical methods to study relations between inhibitor/antagonist structure and effects on properties of the inhibitor/antagonist-protein complex, such as conformational entropy and solvation. Synthesized compounds will be evaluated with respect to effects on inflammation, cancer and Malaria-infections in vitro and in vivo.

Eligibility/Entry Requirements

Students with basic eligibility for third-cycle studies are those who- have completed a second-cycle degree- have completed courses of at least 240 credits, of which at least 60 credits are from second-cycle courses, or- have acquired largely equivalent knowledge in some other way, in Sweden or abroad.Special eligibility requirements comprise knowledge from first-cycle studies or the equivalent, but can also refer to special professional experience. Additionally, sufficient knowledge of the subject area is required for third-cycle studies.Students meeting special eligibility requirements are those who have- at least 60 higher education credits within the same subject area as the third-cycle studies, of which in-depth work of at least 30 higher education credits of relevance to the subject area- a Swedish medical degree or Swedish certification as a doctor.

Special requirements for this position: Passed theoretical and practical advanced course in organic chemistry and with good references with respect to laboratory skills. Completed MSc degree specialized in organic chemistry. Strong experiences from synthesis in small and large scale, metal organic chemistry, boron chemistry, cycloadditions, carbohydrate chemistry/biology, and biophysical studies of protein-ligand-water interactions are desirable. Experiences from pharmaceutical industry are desirable.
