Sweden: PHD STUDENT IN PHYSICS

Deadline: 20 Dec. 2012

Type of employment: Limit of tenure, 4 years
Extent: 100 %
Location: Department of Physics, Lund
First day of employment: January 2013
Official Records Number: LTHPA 2012/1100
A PhD position in attosecond physics is available in the attosecond group at Lund University. The candidate selected will be expected to participate in ongoing research projects on the study of applications of attosecond pulses to atomic, molecular, and solid state systems. The research at the division of Atomic Physics is focused around different applications of optics and lasers, ranging from material science to quantum physics, to applications in medicine. The division is a central part in the major interdisciplinary research environment within lasers at Lund University – the Lund Laser Centre. The division is also heavily involved in the undergraduate education, especially within the “Photonics” program. Part of the PhD work will be done with in the consortium QCC@LU, which bridges different faculties with a common question centered on the question about controlling quantum coherences in systems with different degrees of complexity.

Job assignments

The research project mainly concerns new approaches to use attosecond pulses. This involves improving the generation process, but also studying applications related to quantum optics and quantum information. The PhD student is expected to participate in ongoing research on applications of attosecond pulses to atomic and molecular systems. The project will be carried out in close collaboration with the experimental work in the attosecond group, but also with the aim to find new applications where attosecond pulses in combination with an external field is used to control and characterize electron dynamics in collaboration with the quantum information group. Most of the work will be done in Lund, but it may also include collaborations with other groups.

Eligibility/Entry Requirements

A formal requirement for doctoral studies in physics is an advanced university degree within a related field, such as a Master´s degree in physics or equivalent, or substantial advanced course work at the master level or comparable. Furthermore, the acceptance is based on the estimated ability to accomplish the postgraduate studies.
